Portable Appliance Testing

We are experienced with PAT and can offer advice on what should and should not be covered. In our experience, we have found that it is not always clear as to when an appliance should first be tested.

Why do I need to Test?

The law states that you must maintain electrical equipment. There is no set period for how often this should take place but you should use your common sense.

As a rough guide, an appliance that is used on a regular basis should be inspected at least once a year.  This could include items such as kettles or Vacuum cleaners.

Equipment such as monitors and laptops should be checked every 2 to 4 years.

You should, of course, perform an informal inspection while setting up the new equipment but it is not necessary to record the inspection.

What records should I keep.?

There is no law that states you need to keep records.  However, it does make sense from an inventory perspective to keep note of the date and devices types that were inspected. Ideally, you will have an asset system with each appliance labelled for clear identification. You may also want to label the appliance with the date the last inspection was performed.

What devices should and should not be tested?

If the item is portable then it should be appliance tested. So a reverse example would be  a wall mounted monitor that would be exempt from PAT.

When should I first test a new device

It is not necessary to test new equipment. It would have been your suppliers responsibility to check the equipment was in working order before dispatch.

You should, of course, perform an informal inspection while setting up the new equipment but it is not necessary to record the inspection.
